What We Pour Slabs For
Most of our slab work falls into a handful of categories. Shed and workshop pads are the most common, giving a storage building or backyard shop a dry, level floor instead of dirt or pavers that shift. Parking pads add a spot for an extra vehicle, a boat, or a trailer without extending the whole driveway. RV pads need more thought, since the weight involved is significant. AC and generator pads keep equipment level and off the ground. Hot tub pads have to be built for a load that is far heavier than people expect once the tub is full and occupied. We also pour pads for grills, outdoor kitchens, mailboxes, and seating areas.
What we don't pour: house foundations or structural building slabs. Our slab work is for detached, non-habitable structures and equipment pads. Our Process, From Estimate to Finished Pad
We start with a free on-site estimate. We look at where the pad is going, how you'll be using it, what the ground is doing there, and how water moves across that part of the yard. Size, thickness, and reinforcement all come out of that conversation, because a shed floor and an RV pad are not the same pour. On install day we excavate and grade, compact the base, set forms, place reinforcement where the load calls for it, and pour and finish the slab. Why Base Prep Decides Whether a Slab Lasts
The visible part of a slab is concrete. The part that determines whether it stays flat is what's underneath it. A pad poured on loose, uncompacted, or poorly graded ground will settle unevenly, and once it settles it cracks, because concrete has no give. Compacting the base properly and getting the grade right before any concrete arrives is unglamorous work that never shows up in a photo, and it's the difference between a pad that's still level in fifteen years and one that has a visible dip under one corner of your shed. It's also the step that gets skipped when someone quotes a suspiciously low number.
What Affects the Cost of a Slab
Square footage is the starting point, but thickness often matters just as much. A pad rated for foot traffic and a storage shed is a different pour than one carrying a truck, an RV, or a full hot tub, and the load determines both thickness and whether reinforcement is needed. Site prep is the other major factor: how much excavation, grading, and base material the spot requires, and whether anything has to be removed first. Access affects it too, since a pad a truck can reach is cheaper to pour than one at the back of a fenced yard. Finish is usually a smaller factor on slabs than on patios. Why Florida Ground Changes the Approach
Marion County's sandy soil compacts differently than the clay soils a lot of generic advice is written for, and that affects base prep. Some spots drain fast, others hold water, and a pad sitting in a low spot that collects runoff will have a shorter life regardless of how well it was poured. Do you pour house foundations?
No. We pour slabs and pads for detached, non-habitable structures and equipment: sheds, workshops, parking and RV pads, AC and generator pads, and hot tub pads. House foundations and structural slabs for living space are outside what we take on, and we'd rather tell you that up front than be the wrong fit for your project.
How thick does a shed or parking pad need to be?
It depends on what the pad is carrying. A storage shed pad and a pad meant to hold a vehicle or an RV call for different thicknesses, and heavier loads may also need reinforcement. We size it to your actual use during the on-site estimate rather than defaulting to one number for every job.
Do I need a permit for a shed slab?
It depends on the size of the structure and where you are in Marion County, and requirements can differ inside city limits. Homeowners pull permits for this kind of work when they're required.
